Tips For Building Everyday Resilience When We Need Them Most

Earlier this year, I started working with Dr. Robyne Hanley-Dafoe on a series of white papers to help individuals build the capacity for resilience.

In the first paper, Everyday Resilience, she reminds readers that we can do hard things and still feel okay. She provides tips and insights and explains the five core traits of resilience. The insights and strategies outlined in Everyday Resilience are helpful at any time; however, they have become even more salient in the face of the COVID-19 crisis.

  1. Belonging – This trait is about being connected to people and being part of something bigger than yourself. While we may be physically distancing from each other, we can still connect by video, voice and online chats. We are so very fortunate to have the technology we have today to help us weather this storm.
  2. Perspective – Dr. Hanley-Dafoe reminds readers that our outlook profoundly impacts our ability to move through challenges.
  3. Acceptance – In this section she discusses the importance of focusing on how and what instead of why.
  4. Positivity and hope-filled-ness – She explains, “While it’s natural to avoid challenges and risks, we can only realize what we’re truly capable of by being courageous and leaning toward positivity.”
  5. Humour – In times like these, it is easy to feel like there is no place for humour. In fact, it is an important part of resilience.

I am very proud to be a part of this work and to be able to share this resource. I believe, now, more than ever, we should heed Dr. Hanley-Dafoe’s advice to focus on what matters most and practice self-care.
